Dear Mr Vara:
FE 8 ~ 8 1992
CITY CL£NK U£pgNTNj fNT
I am writing to you in your capacity as Chairman of the City
Traffic Commission. From conversations with Cathy McKay and
Chuck Rough, I understand there is a vacancy on the commission
created by the departure of Roy Tindal, and that you will select
his successor. I would like to apply to fill this position.
Currently, I am on the Transportation and Circulation Element
Committee for the new General Plan. We have spent a great deal
of time seeking solutions to traffic problems in the city and I
would like to continue to do so after the committee's work is
completed. I believe my experience there can be put to good use
on the Traffic Commission. If you need further information or
have any questions please call me at 463-4351.
Your truly,

SUBJ: DANGEROUS INTERSECTION AT POMOLI'fA
Charley:
In my opinion, a dangerous intersection exists at Pomol.ir(a School.
This intersection is located immediately in front of the Pomolita
Reading Building at the intersection of Cypress and Spring Streets.
The time of greatest jeopardy to our Pomolita students is from
7:25 a.m. to 7:51 a.m., a time in which parents are transporting
their youngsters to school by automobile, youngsters are riding
their bicycles to school, and Pomolita students are walking to school.
Pedestrians, bicyclists and automobiles ALi, converge upon this inter-
section simultaneously without regard Eor rules of safety or traffic
laws.
While there is a stop sign at the corner of Spring Street, very few
autos stop for it. Moreover, because the Cypress hill is so steep,
automobiles are usually accelerating at a high rate of speed as they
crest the hill, with very limited visibility for pedestrians, bicyclists,
and other automobiles in tl~e intersection.
I have placed teachers on morning supervision in this area of high
traffic congestion, but, regrettably our staff do not assume the
authority or responsibility of a traffic control officer and more-
over, do not perceive this to be their role.
Charley, put bluntly, this intersection is "an accident waitng to
happen , and I fear it may result in a child's serious injury or death.
The Ukiah Police Department has, upon request, driven by and periodically
monitored the intersection but unfortunately, has not done so with any
degree of regularity.
As principal of Pomolita School, T strongly urge you to use your
authority as District Superintendent to provide, minimally, a cross-
ing guard in this dangerous and highly congested area. The purpose of
the crossing guard would be to safeguard the youngsters coming into the
intersection, provide some degree of traffic control, and to note
drivers who fail to stop for the boulevard stop, and accordingly, re-
port these offenders to the Ukiah police using their vehicle license
plate number as identiPication.~
Because of the urgency of this matter, I respectfully request your
thoughtful consideration and appropriate action as expeditiously as
is possible.

Chief of Police
City of Ukiah

Dear Fred,
I am writting this letter on behalf of the more than 150 families who
come to pick up their children in front of our school each day. The curb,
from in front of our driveway past the crosswalks, is painted red. This
causes mass confusion and traffic jams both before and after school. We
are asking that you and the Traftic Commission review the red zone in
front of our school and consider elinimating the red zone from the
driveway to the northern crosswalk. In place of that zone, I would like to
see limited parking (15 min) available to parents and visitors. I think that
by reducing the red zone, much of the traffic confusion would be reduced.
Thank you for your time in considering this matter.
Sincerely,
I {~~ r'L~.~->{-* yes
