HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC Reso 2025-39 Amending the DEI Committee Membership StructureRESOLUTION NO.2025-39 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF UKIAH AMENDING RESOLUTION 2024- 09 TO REVISE THE DIVERSITY AND EQUITY COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIP STRUCTURE WHEREAS, in 2020, the Ukiah City Council adopted Resolution 2020-09 establishing an eleven (11) member Diversity and Equity Standing Committee ("Committee"), tasked with developing an Equity Action Plan, which was successfully completed and adopted through City Council Resolution 2022- 01; and WHEREAS, in 2024, the Equity Action Plan initiatives were incorporated into the City's Strategic Plan by adoption of City Council Resolution 2024-09, and the role of the Committee Members transitioned to serving as Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion ("DEI") ambassadors within the community; and WHEREAS, City staff have continued to track and implement the initiatives outlined in the Equity Action Plan since its incorporation into the City Council's Strategic Plan; and WHEREAS, since that time, the Committee's workload has significantly decreased, contributing to reduced meeting attendance; and WHEREAS, vacancies on the Committee have become increasingly difficult to fill; and WHEREAS, reducing the number of seats on the Committee will increase quorum reliability while preserving diverse representation and ensuring the Committee's ongoing active role as DEI ambassadors in our community. NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED that: The Equity and Diversity Standing Committee ("Committee") shall consist of seven (7) members. The members shall consist of two (2) members of the City Council and five (5) members representing organizations in the City of Ukiah or the greater Ukiah Valley, including Redwood and Potter Valleys, which serve or represent one (1) of the nine (9) distinct demographic groups as follows: (1) Persons with lived experience of poverty (currently or formerly living at or below the poverty level); (2) Persons with physical or mental disabilities; (3) Persons from the LGBTQ+ community; (4) Native American tribes and communities in Mendocino County; (5) Persons from the Hispanic/Latino community; (6) Persons of color; (7) Persons whose primary language is not English; (8) Youth 21 years and younger; and (9) Seniors 65 years or older. In addition, committee members must either reside or work in the City of Ukiah. Members shall be appointed by the City Council based on written applications submitted by deadlines established by the City Council and any oral interviews at the discretion of the City Council.
