Names Survey Response Needed for Public Agency Compliance Importance:High [EXTERNAL EMAIL] DO NOT CLICK links or attachments unless you recognize the sender and know the content is safe. Good Afternoon Public Agency Representatives and Partners, California Natural Resources Agency (CNRA) and the California Advisory Committee on Geographic Names (CACGN) have reviewed AB 2022’s Sq. Name Submittal Report and it shows your Public Agency did not submit a survey as of the July 1, 2023, deadline. If a survey has been overlooked; please accept our apology for the oversite and send the confirmation email received after submission. CNRA and CACGN respectfully request a survey to be submitted for all geographic features and place names containing the term “Sq_” at Submit Sq. Names or Confirm No Sq. Names to Report within 10 business days. Place names include, but are not limited to, parks, state or local roads, streets, alleys, bridges, and publicly owned buildings or structures within the jurisdiction of the state or political subdivision of the state. On September 23, 2022, Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 2022 (Ramos 2022) requiring the term “squaw” (herein “sq_”) to be removed from all geographic features and place names in the state. The term “sq_” is a racist and derogatory term that has historically been used as an offensive ethnic, racial, and sexist slur, particularly for indigenous women. All Public Agencies, including any state agency, local governing body, and any other political subdivision of the state are required to comply with AB 2022. More information can be found on our website at CA Geo Naming (CACGN). Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions and we look forward to partnering with you on the implementation of AB 2022.
