ATTEST: City clerk -- 32 CITY OF UKIAH DEPUTY POLICE CHIEF April 1975 Definition Under general direction, to assist in planning and directing the activities of the Police Department; to direct the detective and administrative divisions; to act for the Chief in his absence; and to do related work as required. Examples of Duties Confers with the Chief regarding plans, policies and operations; supervises and participates in in-service training for all department personnel; investigates complaints against Police Department personnel and prepares written reports and recommenda- tions to the Chief; makes recommendations regarding departmental policiesl arranges and maintains overall work schedules for detective personnel; as commander of the reserve force, makes assignments and schedules the work of reserve officers; directly supervises laboratory functions and all narcotic cases; confers with subordinates regarding special assignments and details; assumes responsibility for department-wide programs involving personnel, budgeting, training, communications, records and maintenance of equipment and supplies; assists the Chief in establishing priorities and preparing budgets; prepares report forms and outlines reporting systems; advises on and assures com- pliance with State requirements in regard to format and opera- ting procedures; supervises the compilation and summary of statistics and related data; acts for the Chief during his absence or at his direction. Employment Standards Education and E×Derience: An Associate Deqree is mandatory. Baccalaureate Deqree is preferred. In addition, the candidate must possess a minimum of an Advanced D.O.S.T. Certificate, preference qiven to holder of D.O.$.T. ~iddle ~anaqement Certificate, supplemented by additional formal traininq in po]ice science and administration with at least three years of responsible supervisory experience as a Lieutenant or higher in a full time paid California law enforcement agency. Knowledqes and Abilities: Knowledge of the principles of modern police administration and of accepted practices and procedures of police science; knowledqe of criminal _ l_aw with. particular emphasis, on the apprehension, arrest and prosecution of law violators; knowledge of scientific identification and investigative techniques; knowledge of the causes, prevention and control of juvenile delinquency; ability to analyze and interpret police problems and criminal evidence; ability to instruct and advise subordinates in all ohases of law enforcement and oolite procedures; ability to supervise the ~ork of subordinate police officers; ability to establish and maintain effective public relations.
