RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF UKIAH SUPPORTING THE CONTINUATION OF
THE ARMY RESERVE UNIT IN UKIAH
WHEREAS Strength in Reserve has been the cornerstone of our nation's
defense since 1776 and
WHEREAS this strength in Reserve has relied greatly on the contri-
butions of the Citizen-Soldier within his local unit and
WHEREAS these local units are located in Communities of all sizes
throughout our Nation and
WHEREAS the Army Reserve unit in Ukiah gives residents of this area
an opportunity to serve their nation while living at home and
WHEREAS the Ukiah unit performs many valuable Community service pro-
jects throughout Lake and Mendocino Counties and
WHEREAS the 75,000 residents of Lake and Mendocino Counties would
not have the opportunity to serve in a local unit if the Ukiah unit was
relocated and
WHEREAS we are very proud of our local unit and
WHEREAS relocating the Ukiah unit would work a severe hardship on
existing members and
WHEREAS the economic impact of losing this annual payroll of $185,000
would have a detrimental impact on our rural economy and
WHEREAS a considerable number of the members of the unit would not
continue in the program if the unit was not in Ukiah and
WHEREAS the U.S. Army Reserve is currently 50,000 men understrength
nationwide, now
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that it is in the best interests
of both the U.S. Army Reserve and the City of Ukiah to continue the
present unit in Ukiah and to create a provisional batallion in San Jose.
