RESOLUTION NO. 79-17
RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF UKIAH IN SUPPORT OF THE SUN HOUSE AS A
STATE HISTORICAL LANDMARK
WHEREAS, Grace Carpenter Hudson was a great artist of
the early Twentieth Century, lived in Ukiah and is now noted
in the State for her Indian portraits; and
WHEREAS, the Hudson and Carpenter families were promi-
nent in the early history and settlement of Ukiah and the
County of Mendocino; and
WHEREAS, the home of Grace and John Hudson at 431 South
Main Street in Ukiah commonly known as the Sun House, con-
tains over 25,000 objects of historic value which have
been catalogued by the Anthropology Department of Sonoma
State under the direction of Professor David Peri; and
WHEREAS, the citizens of the City of Ukiah have placed
such historic value on the Sun House that the City has pur-
chased the home and property; and
WHEREAS, the site is of State and National significance
as Grace Carpenter Hudson is recognized as one of California's
greatest artists; and
WHEREAS, Sun House represents such an important record
of early Ukiah and an outstanding record of our Native
American Pomo Indian Tribe that the Sun House residence and
artifacts should be preserved for their historical and
cultural value.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Super-
visors do declare their support that Sun House be recognized
as a State Historical Landmark and ask that it be declared

so by the State of California
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council, as
owners of the property do hereby grant their permission for
the registration of this property as a State Historical
Landmark,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City consents to the
placement of the plaque on the property so designating the
historical landmark and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council reaffirms
its committment to maintain the Carpenter-Hudson property
in a manner consistent with the highest standards of
historic preservation and the guidelines of the State Historic
Preservation Office.
