of our area is the hardboard industry as represented by the local
plant of the Masonite Corpo~ration; and
'~qEHEAS, The popolation of o~r incorporated area has incre~s~
ed over 2000 since the opening of this plant, as indicated by
o ffici~l census figures for 1950 and 1953; and the investment in new
homes, and business establishments is definitely ~el~ted to the
success of this indus try; and
WHEREAS, The future of the h~rdbosrd industry nationally,
as well ss locally, is in Jeopardy because of unfair foreign compe-
tition which, because of $ wage scale and employee benefits about
one-h~lf of American rates, and ocean freight r~tes more favorable
than ~merican Hail rates, is able to produce at a costwhtch our
American free enterprize system, with the wages and benefits it psys
to maintain our st andard of living, and its more fsvorable working
conditions, cannot compete and still produce s superior product; snd~
W~-3~q~S, Our government for years has maintained a protectiv~
tariff toprotect the American h~rdbosrd industry fp~m such unfair
competition, which tariff hms been reduced in the last few years from
30% to 15%, to ~ 1/2% indicating a trend toward further reduction if
not outright elimination;
