HomeMy WebLinkAbout81-19 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 RESOLUTION NO. 81-19 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF UKIAH ENDORSING THE PETITION CAMPAIGN FOR STATEWIDE REFERENDUM TO STOP THE PERIPHERAL CANAL (SB 200) WHEREAS, the action of the California Letislature in passing, and that of the Governor in signing SB 200, providing for the building of a canal (estimated price 23 billion dollars) around the Delta to carry the Sacramento River and diverted Northern rivers directly into the water project system for diversion South is a threat to the environment of the Delta and of San Francisco Bay and, WHEREAS, it is the stated intention of the State Department of Water Resources, of agribusiness in the San Joaquin Valley and of the Southern California water developers to divert North Coast Rivers into this canal as soon as they deem it necessary, thereby destroying our fisheries, wild- life habitat and necessary watersupply to our agriculture, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Ukiah, Mendocino County, California endorse and support the statewide effort to force a referendum on this destructive action of the Legislature and Governor by the qualifying of 360,000 signatures of registered voters in California by September 10, 1980, and urge all citizens to support this effort, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Saturday, August 16, 1980, be declared STOP THE CANAL DAY for maximum effort in the gathering of signatures.
