HomeMy WebLinkAbout82-44RESOLUTION NO. 82-44 RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE NUCLEAR WEAPONS FREEZE AND CALIFORNIA BALLOT INITIATIVE WHEREAS, the United States and Soviet Union combined have enough warheads to destroy civilization as we know it; WHEREAS, the United States and the Soviet Union are planning a massive nuclear weapons buildup which will add thousands of new and more dangeroos 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 weapons to the current arsenals; WHEREAS, this buildup of nuclear weapons will increase the risk 'nuclear war and decrease the possibility of reaching mutual agreements to reduce nuclear weaponry; WHEREAS, a national campaign is underway to halt and reverse the nuc].ear arms race by achieving a bilateral nuclear arms freeze; WHEREAS, the freeze proposal has already gained broad public support~ including passage by a wide majority of the Massachusetts and Oregon Senates and by the unanimous vote of the New York State Senate; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Ukiah supports and endorses the Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign and the placing on the November 1982 California ballot of an initiative that will express the following: "The people of the State of California, recognizing that the safety and security of the United States must be paramount in the concerns of the American people; and further recognizing that our national security is reduced, not increased by the growing danger of nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union which would result in millions of deaths of the people in California and throughout the nation, do hereby urge that the Government of the United States propose to the Government of the Soviet Union that both countries agree to 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 immediately halt the testing, production and further deployment of all nuclear weapons, missles and delivery systems in a way that can be checked and verified by both sides."
