HomeMy WebLinkAbout88-31 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 2O 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 RESOLUTION NO. 88-31 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF UKIAH OPPOSING OFF-SHORE OIL DRILLING AND GAS EXPLORATION WHEREAS, the City of Ukiah and surrounding community are dependent upon prime agricultural resources including vineyards, orchards, and timber for their economic viability; and WHEREAS, these resources require high quality air for their continued existence as a marketable resource; and WHEREAS, off-shore oil drilling and its attendant on-shore processing and distribution facilities may have a negative impact on the inland air quality within Mendocino County; and WHEREAS, the inland areas of Mendocino County do reap benefits from the scenic and recreation oriented tourism opportunities found on the coast; and WHEREAS, these coastal opportunities may be negated by the installation of drilling platforms and coastal support facilities thereby reducing the quality of life not only on the coast but in the interior valleys; and WHEREAS, the transportation networks between the coastal areas and the main metropolitan/urban areas traverse the inland valleys and increased heavy truck traffic associated with distribution activities may have a potential negative effect on tourism, commercial, and residential ,, travelling opportunities; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Ukiah opposes off-shore drilling and gas exploration off the Mendocino 6 7 8 9 10 11 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 23 24 25 26 27 28 County coast because of the potential negative effects and impacts on the interior valleys of Mendocino County. PASSED AND ADOPTED this 3rd day of February, 1988, by the following roll call vote: AYES: Councilmembers Shoemaker, Myers, Hickey, Schneiter, and Mayor Henderson NOES: None ABSENT: None ATTEST: - 2 -
