RESOLUTION NO. 91-56
RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF UKIAH
SUPPORTING "THE HEIRS OF COLUMBUS" CHAUTAUQUA
IN THE CITY OF UKIAH DURING THE SU~ER OF 1992
WHEREAS, 1992 marks the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus'
voyage to the New World; and
WHEREAS, Columbus' voyages set in motion a series of multi-cultural
encounters in the Americas, the effect of which we continue to feel to
this day; and
WHEREAS, The California Council for the Humanities is to celebrate
these encounters in select California communities by presenting "The Heirs
of Columbus" Chautauqua Program;
WHEREAS, "The Heirs of Columbus" Chautauqua Program consists of
dramatic portrayals of historic figures; and
WHEREAS, The City and valley of Ukiah are demographically,
culturally, and geographically central to Northern California communities,
including those in Lake, Napa, Sonoma and Humboldt Counties, and faces
major issues of growth and cultural integration; and
WHEREAS, It is essential in planning the future that we find our
common cultural roots as a community; and
WHEREAS, the City of Ukiah Cultural Arts Advisory Board has endorsed
this Program; and
WHEREAS, a committee comprised of staff and supporters from the Ukiah
Player's Theatre, Mendocino County Library, Mendocino College, and Grace
Hudson Museum will coordinate the fund raising for this program.
NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED that the City Council, on
behalf of the City of Ukiah, pledge our support for programming "The Heirs
of Columbus" Chautauqua in the City of Ukiah during the Summer of 1992 and
we embrace the opportunity to host this unique commemorative event.
PASSED AND ADOPTED this 19thday of dune 1991, by the following
roll call vote:
