City of Healdsburg Downtown Utility and Streetscape
Improvements, Healdsburg, CA
BKF was retained by the City Healdsburg to provide Utility and . ,"
Streetscape Improvements in historic downtown Healdsburg. j
Completed in September 2013, the primary objective of this '
project was to increase pedestrian mobility through designing I
;j_-- ' • ,i
enhanced sidewalks and crosswalks that incorporate current ADA -- e
regulations taking advantage of landscaping and surface '
treatments through the introduction of unique surface color,
pattems and textures. BKF's goal was to create pedestrian zones `
catering to the passing public, window shoppers and those '
seeking an outdoor dining experience from restaurants adjacent
to the new sidewalks. x -
As part of the surface improvements, the original subsurface utilities needed to be upgraded. Original sewer, water and
storm drain systems affected by the surface improvements were fully repaired or completely replaced. Stormwater and
drainage facilities incorporated Low Impact Development (LID) concepts in new landscape areas adjacent to the
sidewalks. BKF completed design topography, developed preliminary construction documents and facilitated public
presentations of the planned improvements.
Miller Avenue Streetscape, Mill Valley, CA
As one of two main arterials providing access
to Mill Valley since the 1800's, Miller Avenue is
both of historically significant and local
importance. The City intends to implement a :
streetscape design to improve both the quality . _
and access of the street as well as its regional 4i.S`',;
importance. This multiphase project will look y , W, &" i ,

functionality as a shopping district and
gathering spot for residents of adjacent
neighborhoods and the surrounding areas.
To support an implementation strategy for the Miller Avenue Streetscape, BKF is assisting the City in preparing
applications for funding from several federal and state grant programs. We successfully applied for and received a Cycle
10 Safe Routes to School Grant award of$450,000 to construct a multiple use pathway along Miller Avenue between
Camino Alto and the Mill Valley-Sausalito path. This project will enhance safety for children attending both Tamalpais
High and Mill Valley Middle Schools. The SR25 award, other grants, and Measure A will provide the$18 million in
funding to construct the streetscape.
Preliminary investigations were conducted for the existing infrastructure to inform design recommendations, costs, and I
to address critical needs. Asphalt paving, sidewalk concrete, accessible curb ramps, storm drainage, sewer pipes, and
lighting are examples of infrastructure reviewed and addressed as part of this project.

Macdonald Avenue, Richmond, CA I
BKF Engineers led a team designing street improvements and utility infrastructure upgrades to Macdonald Avenue
between Garrard Avenue to San Pablo Avenue. The team held several meetings with the community, local businesses,
and the public arts commission to understand their concems. The proposed improvements were a balance of public '
comment, required improvements to the public infrastructure, and budget.
The ultimate design resulted in a roadway alignment revision, new medians, landscaping, street lighting, traffic signals, a
fiber optic communications system, bus shelter and pullout provisions, street furnishings, and new storm drainage
infrastructure. Extensive coordination with water, electric, and telephone utilities was required. In addition, permits '
were obtained through Caltrans for improvement in the state right of way.Two of the five phases have been
constructed.
Nevin Avenue Pedestrian Improvements, Richmond, CA
The Richmond Community Redevelopment Agency received funding from the Metropolitan Transportation
Commission's grant for Livable Communities to enhance pedestrian and bicycle facilities between Richmond Transit
Village, employers, and housing. We developed this project in two phases commencing in 2008. The first phase
completed in 2010, extended west from the Transit Village to downtown while the final phase, anticipated beginning
construction in 2013, extends east to the Civic Center.
BKF prepared construction documents along Nevin Avenue from Harbour to the Civic Center including widened
sidewalks, landscaping, bicycle lanes, street lighting, bulb-outs, and new utility systems. A key component of the
streetscape includes storm water management elements designed to filter pollutants from runoff including rain gardens,
pervious pavement, and subterranean treatment cells. The project required considerable coordination with Pacific Gas I
and Electric and East Bay Municipal Utility District for relocation of power, gas, and water facilities.
As a federal funded project, BKF assisted the Agency in coordinating environmental review and right of way certification
in compliance with the CALTRANS Office of Local Assistance's requirements. For the west segment, BKF provided both
bid and construction management services. During construction, our resident engineer inspected the work daily and
completed a project records in accordance with Federal requirements.
