I graduated from St. Mary's School in 1958 and from Ukiah High in 1962. There was no college here at that time, so I went away to school, married an Army officer and traveled around the world. Now that I am semi -retired, i have the time to do so. I have experience working with people of all ages and many cultures. I have a deep concern for our community, and I believe I could fulfill the duties of City Council for Mr. McCowen's unexpired two-year term. Forms: City Council Application Revised: 12/11/08 December 29, 2008 Ms. Mary Anne Landis sommommmmm Ukiah, California 95482 City of Ukiah 300 Seminary Avenue Ukiah, California 95482-5400 Attn: City Clerk Dear City Council Members, As a 31 year resident of Mendocino County, living 21 years within the city limits, I'm enamored with our town. The possibilities for creating an ever more functional and vibrant community inspire me to submit this application. In short, I'm applying for the council vacancy created by John McCowen's election to the Board of Supervisors to make an impact. My years of experience in local schools and in developing a charter school as well as my new career as a small builder provide me with skills related to communication, small business finances, accountability, doing business in our community and squeezing quality out of limited resources. Community involvement as a City of Ukiah planning commissioner and participant in two, year-long Leadership Institutes (Leadership Mendocino and Leadership Institute for Ecology and the Economy in Sonoma County), as well as educating myself about land use planning have added to my repertoire of understanding the myriad issues in our city. Many mon: of the dots are connected now. Additionally, I am an active person who enjoys working with people, working hard, and creating solutions to difficult problems. As you all know, Ukiah has a uniquely complex structure with Water, Sewer, Airport, Landfill and Electrical departments that few other cities, especially small cities, have to manage. With the economic realities facing the City of Ukiah, these components of our City, which require so much oversight, could also provide opportunities. I'd like to make a difference in Ukiah by finding ways for government to work better, by collaborating to help grow our existing businesses, by creating opportunities for small and large businesses to be attracted to Ukiah and stay here and by helping to figure out how we grow without wrecking our distinctive valley. If I am appointed, I look forward to exploring the opportunities and challenges we face, together as a forward -moving team. Sincerely, Mat/ Landis Enclosure: 2 IMMEMEMEm Ukiah, CA 95482 707 OBJECTIVE To impact the effectiveness of city government, economic development in our region and preservation of our small town quality of life through active participation on the Ukiah City Council. Forms: City Council Application Revised: 12/11/08 ,Tohn C, Graff 111 W Sfree f Ukiah, CA 95482 ( - home; VOMM - cell) net Dear Councilmembers: I would like to state first that should I be appointed to the position of Ukiah City Council member I would resign from any current positions that I hold that could be considered a conflict of interest. The most obvious being Executive Director of The Employers Council of Mendocino County, The Ukiah Daily Journal, the Ukiah Parks, Rec, and Golf Commission and any others that the Council deems necessary. As you may or may not be aware, I have worked with many boards and commissions for a number of years. In several cases I have held the position of Chair or President. In other instances I have been an active member. I believe in boards, commissions and committees. In the past several years I have sat in on at least 75% of all Ukiah City Council meetings, as well as many other City of Ukiah committee meetings. It would be difficult for the City Council to find another person who has the knowledge and education of the workings of the Ukiah City Council politics that I bring to the table. I believe the most important reason I should be apponted to the Ukiah City Council is that I represent a large percentage of the citizens of Ukiah that are not currently represented strongly enough by the current, sitting Ukiah City Council. These would be the moderates, conservatives, and business people who lobby for the smallest and most efficient government possible. A more balanced Ukiah City Council will serve our citizens properly. There is not a better choice to balance out the Ukiah City Council than I. Respectfully submitted, Ivy Z'1A7/ John C.
